Is my roof suitable for Solar Panels?

Is my roof suitable?

This is what we do, day in day out, and no two roofs are ever the same. But there are some basic principles to help you find out whether you have a suitable roof:

Size

Do you have at least 12m2 of roof, free of chimneys and vents and velux windows?
This would be big enough to park a car on, though we wouldn't advise it…

Orientation

Does it face approximately South?
The closer to South, the more electricity each panel will generate, so SW/S/SE orientations make the most financial sense, NW/N/NE orientations would mean significantly lower outputs.

Tilt

(Angle or Slope)

Is your roof Flat or Sloped?
Flat roofs are fine but require planning permission.
For sloped roofs:

  • the best angle is between 30 and 35 degrees
  • the minimum is 15 degrees to ensures the panels are self cleaning
  • the maximum is 50 degrees, any steeper and you start to lose performance

Location

Are you South of Manchester?
Mostly because of where we are based, but also because of the reducing solar radiation levels as you head further North.

Shading

Is your roof in full sun most of the day?
Some shading we can cope with, but if a nearby tree or building puts you in shade it will, affect your returns.

Ownership

Is it your roof?
You do need to be the freeholder or be acting on their behalf, as at present all the electricity must go into a single fuse box i.e. it can't be split between flats.
